Property Tax Exemptions:
IMPORTANT: If you purchased or refinanced a home this year or change the way title is held it is important you make sure your property tax exemptions are in place before December 31st.
This is very important as these deductions can save you a lot of money each year by reducing the amount of the tax assessed value of the property. Many title companies are now filing Homestead and/or Mortgage exemptions on your behalf in certain counties, but we still recommend contacting your County Auditor’s office to confirm that they have been filed. The best way to do this is by taking your packet of closing papers to the nearest county auditor’s office.
The most common two exemptions you will likely qualify for are the Homestead and Mortgage exemptions but you may be entitled to more. Be sure you look over the gold sheet that was given to you at your closing to review all the possible tax exemptions or click here.
We also highly recommend requesting a receipt of the filings while you are there. Be sure to keep your receipt of the exemptions in a safe place as this is your only proof that your exemptions have been filed.
