1. Give Your HVAC System Some Attention
Your air conditioner has been putting in the work.

Start with the basics. Check your filter and replace or clean it as recommended for your system. Make sure indoor vents are not blocked, then head outside and look around the exterior unit for weeds, grass clippings, leaves, or other debris.

If your HVAC system has not been professionally serviced recently, this may also be a good time to get that on the calendar.

A little routine attention can help your system run efficiently and give you a chance to catch potential problems while they are still manageable.

2. Check Your Gutters and Where the Water Goes
Gutters may feel like a fall project, but Indiana summer storms make July a good time to give them another look.

Check for debris, sagging sections, leaks, and downspouts that are not directing water away from the house. Then look down. Are there low spots or areas near the foundation where water tends to collect?

Here is an easy homeowner tip: the next time we get a good Indiana downpour, take five minutes to see where the water actually goes.

You may notice an overflowing gutter, a downspout emptying too close to the house, or an area of the yard that consistently holds water. Those are much easier problems to address when you catch them early.

For wood decks, look for loose boards, protruding fasteners, splintering, discoloration, or areas where the finish has worn away. On patios, watch for cracks, settling, weeds between sections, and spots where water collects after a storm.

A good cleaning can make a noticeable difference too.

5. Give the Landscaping a Trim
July has a way of reminding us just how quickly things grow in Indiana.

Walk around the house and look for shrubs, tree limbs, vines, and other vegetation touching the siding, roofline, HVAC equipment, or other parts of the home.

Trimming landscaping away from the house can improve airflow, make the exterior easier to inspect, and keep vegetation from trapping moisture against surfaces.
