Football season has a way of making home feel a little different.
The game comes on. Something good might be cooking. Maybe you have a house full of people, one favorite person beside you, a friend stopping by, or simply a comfortable seat and an afternoon to yourself. However you enjoy the game, football season gives us another reason to appreciate the places where we feel most at home. And sometimes, that is the real home field advantage. Great Spaces Come in All Shapes and Sizes Over the years, Clay Burris, owner and team leader of Burris Realty Group, has walked through a lot of homes across Hamilton County and Central Indiana. Along the way, he has seen some pretty memorable game-day setups. “Over the years, I have been in a lot of homes and seen some pretty incredible spaces designed for watching a game. Finished basements with multiple TVs, dedicated theater rooms, covered patios with outdoor screens, garage hangouts, custom bars, and sometimes just a comfortable family room with the right setup. But what I have always appreciated most is not the space itself. It is what happens there.” That last part matters. A finished basement can be great. So can a covered patio, an outdoor living space, a garage hangout, or a comfortable chair positioned just right in the family room. But a home does not have to be large, newly renovated, or designed for entertaining to work beautifully for the person or people living there. Sometimes what matters most is simply having a place where you can relax, connect, and enjoy being home. Football Season Gives Us a Reason to Slow Down Our homes serve us in different ways. They are where busy mornings begin, where meals happen, where we recharge, and where everyday life unfolds. Depending on the season of life you are in, home might be busy and loud, quiet and peaceful, or somewhere in between. Football season can fit into any of those versions. Clay describes one of the things he enjoys most about it: “Football season has a way of bringing people together around a favorite team, a rivalry, or a big game, and some of the best memories happen with family and friends crowded around the TV, sharing food, telling stories, and probably yelling at a referee or two.” For some people, that scene looks exactly right. For others, game day may mean watching with a partner, inviting one friend over, checking the score while enjoying the patio, or finally getting the television to yourself. There is no right way to enjoy home. And there is no minimum square footage required. As Clay says: “A home does not need an elaborate entertainment space to create those moments. Sometimes the rooms we value most are simply the ones where people naturally want to gather. To me, that is one of the things that makes a house truly feel like home.” Make Your Home Field Work for You Football season can also be a simple invitation to notice how your home is working for you. Where do you naturally feel most comfortable? Maybe it is the kitchen island, a favorite chair, the family room, a finished basement, a screened porch, or a covered patio that lets you enjoy more outdoor living in Indiana as the weather cools. You may discover that the space already works perfectly well. Or perhaps a small change could make it even better. Rearranging furniture might improve the view of the TV. Better lighting could make a room more comfortable. A few extra seats might help when company does come over. A blanket, patio heater, or fire pit could help you enjoy an outdoor space deeper into fall. The goal is not to create someone else’s version of the perfect game-day home. It is to make your home work well for your life. That Is the Real Home Field Advantage The best parts of football season are different for everyone. It may be the rivalry, the food, a room full of conversation, a quiet Sunday afternoon, or simply having nowhere else you need to be for a few hours. That is part of what makes home personal. Square footage, finishes, basements, patios, and other features all have value. But ultimately, a home matters because of the life that happens there. If football season has you noticing what you enjoy about your home, or thinking about something you might want differently someday, we would be glad to be a resource. If you would like to connect, we invite you to email Clay at [email protected]. Whether you are enjoying the home you have, considering a few changes, or wondering what might fit your life next, he would be happy to listen and help however he can.
